How the AL score works

Lower is better. Each subject receives an Achievement Level, and the four ALs are added together.

AL 190–100%
AL 285–89%
AL 380–84%
AL 475–79%
AL 565–74%
AL 645–64%

Foundation subjects: Grade A (75–100) is equivalent to AL6, Grade B (30–74) to AL7, and Grade C (below 30) to AL8.

From a score to a school plan

A cut-off point is a reference, not a reservation. Build all six choices around fit, travel, programmes and a sensible score range.

1

Understand your band

Check the Posting Group and which subject levels may suit the child at Secondary 1.

2

Shortlist with range

Include 2–3 schools where the score is better than the previous year’s cut-off point.

3

Rank honestly

Choice order matters in a tie. Put the genuinely preferred school higher.
